Syariah Advisory Committee
The Syariah Advisory Committee (SAC) was formed in October 2000 with the mandate given by the Board of Directors of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad to oversee the bank's Islamic Banking business and ensuring that we comply with the strict requirements of Syariah Law.
The committee is made up of distinguished academicians from prominent universities in Malaysia and independent consultants who are experts in Syariah. The committee meets regularly to:
- Discuss the development of new Islamic Banking products
- Review the various procedures and practices related to the Islamic Banking business.

Associate Professor
Shamsiah Mohamad obtained her Bachelor of Syariah (1st
Class Honour) from the University of Malaya in 1991. She obtained
her Master of Syariah degree from the same university in 1995.
In 1999, she completed her doctoral studies in Syariah at the
University of Jordan. She specialised in Fikh Muamalat, the subject
in Syariah which deals with socio-economic issues. Professor Shamsiah
was born in Kuala Terengganu in 1967. |

Ustaz Zaharuddin Abd Rahman |

Ustaz Zaharuddin is currently serving the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) as a lecturer. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Usūl ad-Dīn from Malaya University, Malaysia and a Master’s Degree in Fiqh and Usūl al-Fiqh from University of Yarmūk, Jordan. He graduated as one of the top students from the master’s program. He is currently (year 2008 to 2011) pursuing his doctorate degree in Syariah and Islamic Finance at University of Wales, UK. Apart from that, he was also a part time teaching staff at European Institute of Human Sciences in Wales. In the past, he used to serve the nation in various positions: as a Sharī`ah Executive at a corporate company, a Research Fellow in one of the private academic research centre, the Senior Sharī`ah Compliance Manager at a local Islamic Bank, as well as the Head of Sharī`ah Department at International Islamic Bank. He is currently serving as the Sharī`ah Advisor and Consultant several Islamic Financial Institutions in Trinidad, Jeddah, Dubai and Malaysia. He has published a number of books in Fiqh issues as well as Islamic banking and Finance, such as “Money, You and Islam; a view on contemporary banking and financial issues”, “Murabahah : Theory, Application and Issues”, “The Objectives (Maqasid Shari’ah) of Islamic Commercial Transaction” (in Arabic) and many more. |

Irwani Abdullah is currently serving in the Kulliyah
of Economics and Management Sciences, International Islamic University
Malaysia (IIUM) as a lecturer. She obtained her PhD in Islamic
Banking & Finance from University of Loughborough, United
Kingdom in 2005. |
